Scaleup Portugal was born in 2017, after BGI was asked who were the best Portuguese startups by international investors who attended the Web Summit. Since then, BGI has been publishing (in November) on a yearly basis the Scaleup Portugal report. This report identifies the 25 most promising Portuguese scaleups (TOP 25) within a 5 year period, and they are selected based on the following:

• Tech-based or Tech-enabled companies with less than 5 years (A.K.A startups)

• Capital raised

• Revenues generated

• Number of employees

• Time to market

• Capital to revenue ratio

In addition to publishing an objective report, BGI organised a networking event (in November) to celebrate the achievements of these scaleups, share insights from the report, and bring the ecosystem closer. In 2020, this event has now evolved into the Scaleup Portugal Gala, an event designed not only to recognise the TOP 25, but to recognise other promising Scaleups doing amazing things in Portugal and abroad. This gala has also brought together, some of the most relevant corporates in Portugal, who want to recognise and highlight the best innovations they have worked with, in 2020.
